Good will

December 19, 2008

mother_and_child_3Last night we put up the dark green fake Christmas tree and untangled the string of winking lights.

Una’s friend Willie, a carpenter, left her on his death a handcarved crib scene in teak, small brown figures clumsiliy painted but in very natural postures, kneeling, reaching out, leaning over the calm baby in the crib.

Each year Una takes ages to work out who goes where. The lambs and cows and donkey get closer to the crib than the three magi who are placed in order of height. The Virgin Mary in blue goes to the right of the crib and Joseph to the left. A small boy fits in between. (The drummer boy?)

The tiny puppies climbed onto the back of the sofa and stood on their hind legs to watch us.

I put out green and scarlet candles with ivy from the garden.

Then we all sat down and ate pecan nuts and admired the winking lights and fairy on top of the tree while listening to Celtic Woman sing Holy Night.
